Housing

Undergraduate housing at the University of Chicago is provided through the University House System. The House System is comprised of 38 Houses in 10 residence halls. The halls range in size from Max Palevsky with 717 residents living in 8 Houses, to Blackstone, a stand-alone House for 79 residents. The average House size is 70 residents, with the smallest Housing having 36, and the largest housing 104 residents. All Houses have a Resident Head (RH) or an RH couple.  Resident Heads have an affiliation with the University as either an advanced graduate student, faculty, or administrative staff member. Each House also has at least one Assistant Resident Head (RA); an upperclass College or graduate student. Excepting Stony Island, all the residence halls house students from all four class years.

Houses serve as a "home base" for students; a place where they can relax, study, and spend time with friends. Each House has designated tables located in one of the three residential dining commons where students can gather outside of the residence hall. These "House Tables" provide a space in which House community members share meals, engage in academic debate, and socialize with friends.

To learn more about the various residence halls, click on Residence Halls in the navigation panel on the left. For more information about the Houses themselves and the philosophy and program of the University House System, click on House Life. Housing and dining policies and procedures, student rules and regulations, and contract terms are outlined in Policies, Procedures, & Forms.

For day-to-day life in the residence halls, the House System offers convenient services like computing, telecommunications, front desks, and facility maintenance. To learn more, please review the Services section.
